Yarra Valley Wine

Less than an hour away from the stylish inner city of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is Australia’s premier cool-climate wine region and the birthplace of the Victorian wine industry.

Innovators by nature

Despite its 170-year old legacy, the Yarra Valley is known to be a playground for the progressive and innovative. It’s home to over 80 small to medium wineries, operated by an exciting collection of revolutionary winemakers and viticulturalists who push the boundaries of their art, while respecting the history of this picturesque region. The region is incredibly well suited - largely due to the climate and the soils - to premium viticulture and produces some of the best examples of classic varieties anywhere in Australia.

Cool climate wines

The region is often divided in classification, into ‘Lower’ and ‘Upper’ Yarra, in reference to vineyard location along the Yarra River, that meanders from the surrounding Yarra mountain Ranges to the river mouth  in Melbourne. Each classification displays variations in altitude, soils, rainfall and meso-climates. Some wineries sit low within a valley, some are on a slight hill and some are found high up a mountain. The diverse landscape, variations in soil types and cool climate allow Old-World varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz to be grown exceptionally well all over the Valley, as well as an exciting emerging styles such as Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Fiano and Grüner Veltliner.

Centare Vineyard is located in the Lower Yarra, at an altitude of approximately 120 metres above sea level. The soils are a clay river loam.

Idyllic surrounds

The Yarra Valley is truly a sight to be seen. With the Great Dividing Range to the north, the Dandenong Ranges to the south and the Yarra River running straight through the middle - it makes for a stunning landscape of green hills, local farms and thriving flora and fauna. Aside from the landscape, quaint homes sit alongside contemporary cellar doors and acclaimed architecture, while an abundance of delicious local produce can be savoured at local farmers markets and hatted restaurants. It’s a dynamic region with a rich history and promising future.
